A customer received an alarm on the oil sump temperature, which prompted SISO to review six months of historical data. The analysis revealed a steady upward trend, indicating a gradual issue rather than a sudden failure. SISO diagnosed the issue as bearing shield degradation within the engine.
Armed with this insight, the customer was able to schedule the necessary repair during a planned outage which was critical since the fix requires removing the entire engine. This approach allowed continued operation in the short term, gave GE time to perform a root-cause analysis, and ultimately saved the customer significant time, money, and resources by avoiding an unplanned shutdown.
