Optimizing Gas Turbine Water Washes

SmartWash was developed by SISO engineers drawing on decades of field experience and the commissioning of nearly 100 gas turbines. Across these projects, SISO identified a recurring challenge: turbine water wash processes were unreliable and inconsistent due to outdated documentation, fragmented knowledge, and improper detergent-to-water ratios. The manual approach required operators to constantly open and close valves during multi-hour cycles, increasing the risk of incomplete rinses, detergent residue, and potential compressor damage.

To solve this, SISO engineered a water wash design which reduced mechanical complexity and seamlessly integrated with the SnapShot platform for precise, programmatic control. The first successful implementation was completed on an LMS100 unit, followed by deployment across ten LM6000 units. Through iterative hardware and software improvements, SISO pioneered a fully automated turbine water wash system.

With SmartWash, operators simply input the desired detergent concentration, and the system automatically preheats, pre-fills, and cycles through soak, rinse, and blow-dry sequences without manual intervention. This intelligent control removes human error, prevents costly turbine damage, and ensures consistent, high-quality cleaning. By modernizing this critical maintenance process, SISO has reduced operator workload, improved safety, and extended turbine life, setting a new standard for water wash commissioning across the industry.
